Chelsea Market Reopens with Outdoor Dining and Shopping Experiences

Guests can order food and shop from a distance using Chelsea Market's new Mobile Directory.

In mid-August, Chelsea Market moved its restaurants and retailers outdoors along one city block, resulting in one of the largest outdoor dining and shopping destinations New York has to offer. The reimagined market gives visitors the opportunity to revisit the beloved marketplace and its collection of restaurants and retailers in a new and safer way. The move outdoors in the latest initiative developed to keep Chelsea Market tenants operating during the pandemic.

The market boasts more than 115 socially distanced tables lining more than 1,000 linear feet on 15th and 16th Streets (between 9th and 10th Avenues). More than 200 guests can enjoy full table service, self-service, take out, and delivery from the popular selection of restaurants at Chelsea Market.

When arriving in the dining area, guests will find the market’s signature red bistro tables and black bistro chairs. Wooden barriers and industrial steel planters line the extended sidewalks to create an enclosure that separates diners from the street. Six-foot circles are placed on the street and sidewalk to help guests keep social distance along with health ambassadors on-site offering complimentary masks.

“Moving outdoors has given us the opportunity to reconnect with our local audience and the neighborhood,” said Brendan Hayes, president of retail and restaurant at Lobster Place. “New Yorkers are craving enjoyable and unique dining experiences, and that’s exactly what Chelsea Market is doing.”

Chelsea Market’s new Mobile Directory takes the dining and shopping experience at the market into the future by listing all available menu options and for-sale items from each retailer and restaurant. Guests will scan QR codes while onsite, which appear at each table, and once an order is placed, a QR code will direct you to a pickup location for your meal or merchandise. Two kiosk areas are placed on 15th Street with windows for ordering and pickup, and a number of retailers and restaurants will use them for take out.

“Having a safe outdoor space to relax and eat is such an important amenity for the Meatpacking District community,” said Jeffrey LeFrancois, executive director of the Meatpacking Business Improvement District. “Chelsea Market helps make our neighborhood one of the most enjoyable and unique in the city and being able to once again experience the wonders of the market will go a long way in making everyone feel more at home.”

The innovative digital art space located at Chelsea Market ARTECHOUSE will be reopening on Thursday, Sept. 3. The re-debut will feature “Intangible Forms,” a kinetic audio-visual laser performance and installation by Japanese multimedia artist Shohei Rujimoto. The museum will open with limited capacity and other safety protocols to keep visitors safe, like contactless check-ins, mask requirements, temperature checks, hand sanitizing, hourly cleaning, and more.
