Venue Description: Designed in the 1860s by the architects of Central Park, Brooklyn's Prospect Park was to be a natural and serene haven for the people of Brooklyn. Today, it continues to provide visitors a break from the city, and much more. One of the park's main features is the aptly named, 90-acre, Long Meadow, which includes seven ball fields and is a wonderful location for picnics and family fun. The park also encompasses a 60-acre lake, Brooklyn's only forest, seven playgrounds, a tennis house, a zoo (with more than 80 different species), and the nation's first urban Audubon center. The largest area of Prospect Park is covered by the 143-acre Ravine, which is famous for its intricate manmade watercourse of pools, streams, and waterfalls.
In the winter, Wollman Rink is open for ice-skating; in the summer, the same area is filled with families in paddleboats. Also in the summer, Prospect Park is the home of the Celebrate Brooklyn Performing Arts Festival, which attracts a quarter of a million concertgoers each year. Along with other concerts, Celebrate Brooklyn takes place in the Bandshell, which has plaza seating for 2,000 and a lawn that can accommodate up to 5,000 visitors. It also offers one of the country's largest outdoor movie screens. One of the most interesting and unique aspects of the park is the Lefferts Historic House, built by the Dutch in 18th-century Flatbush, a farming community at the time. It has historically appropriate toys, rooms, and activities. Here, the whole family can trace Brooklyn's history all the way from pre-colonial times. Also a favorite among children is the beautiful turn-of-the-century carousel, offering rides on horses, giraffes, and chariots.
The main entrance to Prospect Park is at the intersections of Flatbush, Vanderbilt, and 9th Avenue at Grand Army Plaza. The park is easily accessible by the 2, 3, B, Q, and S subway lines. It is open daily from 5am-1am. For more information, visit prospectpark.org.
